What Properties Are Suited To The ecoTEC 28kW Pro?

Before jumping into our full review, you’ll want to determine if the ecoTEC Pro range is for you. To do this you'll need to know what size boiler you need.

A 28kW is typically suited to a medium sized home. An example of this would be a 3-bedroom semi-detached house. The heating system would have between 10-15 radiators and the property would only have one shower.

For those properties that have more bedrooms or more than one shower, a larger combi or a system boiler is going to be much more suitable.

The Vaillant ecoTEC is available in various outputs including: 24kW, 28kW and 30kW. So, if you have a slightly smaller / larger property than average, you have options.

ecoTEC Pro 28 Boiler Prices

Vaillant boiler prices are extremely competitive when you consider their widely rated as one of the most reliable boiler brands on the market.

Boiler Only

First, we’ll take a look at the price of the unit only (excluding fittings and labour for installation).

Expect to pay around £1,000 for an ecoTEC Pro 28. A combi boiler with comparative customer ratings, and just as popular is the Viessmann Vitodens 0-50W.

Looking at prices for the Viessmann at online plumbing and heating merchants, you’d expect to pay £1,050-£1,100.

Installation Costs

The installation cost for boilers is generally dictated by the boiler you choose, and the complexity of the installation.

For instance, the 24kW ecoTEC Pro, you’ll find online for around £900 (excluding installation), whereas for the 30kW unit you’d expect to pay around £1,100. Put simply, the bigger the boiler, the more it’s going to cost.

In terms of complexity, no boiler installation is the same. A few things that might add to the price of your Vaillant boiler price, including installation, are:

  • New core hole drilled for the boiler's flue (if it needs to be moved to comply with regulations)
  • Moving your boiler to a new location
  • Upgrading pipework to comply with current Gas Safe regulations
  • Upgrading from a system or back boiler, to a Vaillant combi boiler
  • The list goes on!

However, the typical prices for installation of a Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 28kW sit in the region of £2,200-£2,500.

Warranty

A marketing image by Vaillant from the Vaillant EcoTec Pro boiler and the 7 year warranty

One of the main things you need to consider when upgrading your boiler is the warranty.

Low-end boilers might only come with 2-years as standard, after which, you'll be footing the bill for any costly repairs. Typically, we'd suggest not going for a boiler with any less than a 5-year manufacturer's warranty.

The Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 28? It comes with 2-years as standard, but that's bumped to 7-years when installed by a Vaillant Advance installer.

Vaillant Advance is a network of accredited installers. We're registered with Vaillant Advance, so any installation you receive from us will come with a 7-year warranty as standard.

You can also upgrade to a 10-year warranty directly through Vaillant, at a cost of £150+VAT.

Hybrid Compatibility

All ecoTEC Pro boilers (24kW, 28kW and 30kW) can work in a hybrid system.

Essentially, you can use a highly efficient air source heat pump alongside the ecoTEC to provide the best balance of efficiency and heat / hot water on demand.

However, if you are looking to install both a boiler and a heat pump, we suggest reading our guide to air source heat pump costs

Typically, it's much more cost effective to go straight for a heat pump rather than a hybrid heating system, thanks to government grants such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This grant offers up to £7,500 in funding for a new air source heat pump installation.

AquaCOMFORT System

The AquaCOMFORT feature on the ecoTEC Pro focuses on providing instantaneous hot water. That means no running of taps for 30-seconds or more, only to receive luke-warm water.

And, that's going to mean a huge reduction in your water bill, not to mention minimising water wastage.

Compact Dimensions

The design of the ecoTEC Pro is compact, with dimensions measuring just 720mm x 440mm x 335mm.

So, if you’re short on space and want to hide your boiler away in a small cupboard, the ecoTEC is ideal.

Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger

Many low-end boilers use an aluminium heat exchanger.

These are prone to corrosion thanks to limescale and heating sludge build-up. Over time, this creates hot spots and the heat exchanger becomes faulty.

The bad news? If your boiler is out of its warranty, you'll be looking at a repair bill of around £400.

A much better material to use for heat exchangers is stainless steel; that's exactly what the Vaillant ecoTEC Pro 28 uses.

This helps prolong the life of your boiler, as well as reducing the risk of expensive repair bills.

Frost Protection

Frost protection is a must have feature of any combi boiler, and is incorporated into the Vaillant ecoTEC Pro’s design.

During the colder winter months, fluid in your system can freeze. Your boiler will lockout and to get it working again, you'll need a boiler repair engineer to fix the issue, and reset your boiler; this is costly.

One of the most common winter lockouts is caused by the condensate pipe freezing; which doesn't happen with boilers that have a frost protection function.

A boiler using frost protection will monitor the temperature of water in your system. It will fire up your boiler (even when there is no demand for heating or hot water) when water temperature drops to around 5°C, and turn off when it heats it to approximately 10°C.

Vaillant Online Reviews

The Vaillant brand is well-known in the heating industry. They produce everything from heating controls, to cylinders and boilers.

But, when investing this kind of cash, don’t take our word for it…

We’d suggest jumping over to Trustpilot and seeing what Vaillant’s customers have to say about the company, as well as the ecoTEC Pro specifically:

A picture of the Vaillant TrustPilot page showing a score of 4.1

As you can see, there are over 20,000 reviews for Vaillant UK, with an average rating of 4.1; inline with the best boiler manufacturers supplying units to the UK. Of those reviews, 78% are 5-star.

Vaillant’s products are industry leading, yet their prices (including installation), sit in the mid-range.
