What is The Tesla Powerwall 3?

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is a battery storage system, not a solar panel system, as you can see on the website

Homeowners can integrate the Tesla Powerwall 3 into an existing solar panel system.

When excess electricity is produced by solar panels, it can be used to charge the Powerwall 3. This electricity can then be drawn from the battery at a later date, rather than drawing energy from the grid.

However, the Tesla Powerwall 3 can be used as a standalone electricity backup for your home.

You can use a battery backup in situations such as:

  • Power outages: charge your battery so that when there’s a power outage, you’ll have a chunk of power to hand
  • Take advantage of low electricity tariffs: some energy providers offer lower rate electricity at certain times of the day (off-peak), so you can charge your battery at off-peak prices and use it during peak hours

Bear in mind that if you do plan to run your house off a battery from Tesla, a single unit is unlikely to power your property for very long. That’s why the majority of homeowners install more than one.

But naturally, costs for a system using multiple batteries spiral incredibly quickly. Each additional battery is going to add £6,500+ onto your overall installation price.

How Much Does The Tesla Powerwall 3 Cost?

Prices for the Tesla Powerwall 3 storage battery are typically in the region of £8,500+ including installation and all necessary hardware.

For this, you’ll get 1 x Powerwall 3 unit, with a storage capacity of 13.5kWh. Here’s breakdown for estimated costs:

  • Expect to pay around £6,500 for the battery unit
  • Then, add an additional £1,000+ for hardware
  • Finally, expect to pay £1,000+ for installation

If you do need repairs (outside of the 10-year warranty), the most likely component that will need replacing is going to be the inverter. Expect repair / replacement costs for the inverter to be in the region of £750-£1,000.

And if your whole battery needs to be replaced, expect to pay £6,500 or more.

These prices will include VAT. An updated document on the Gov.uk site shows that energy savings materials - including solar storage batteries - will be subject to 0% VAT.

Whilst this is due to change to 5% in 2027, it's likely the scheme will be extended, in order for the UK to hit its net-zero emissions target in the coming years…

If we compare the Tesla Powerwall 3 price (approximately £8.500) to a complete solar panel system, you’d be able to get a full setup including a small 5.3kW Sunsynk battery for a similar price.

If you want a solar panel system that has a battery comparable to the storage of the Powerwall 3, you’d be looking at just under £11,000.

The Cost of The Powerwall 3 With Solar Panels

If you’re looking at buying the Tesla Powerwall 3 as part of a solar panel system, you’ll be paying more than the £8,500 mentioned above (which only includes the battery, hardware and installation).

Whilst a normal solar panel system with a 13kW or larger storage battery is likely to cost around £11,000, prices for Tesla solar panel systems are much higher (given you’ve already paid £8,500+ for the battery alone).

By the time you’ve added on solar panels, fittings and labour for installation, expect your Tesla solar panel system to cost £14,500 or higher.

Our systems start at just under £6,000 inclusive of a small battery and you can get a system utilising a large 15.9kW storage battery (which is bigger than the Powerwall 3) for just under £11,000.

Tesla Powerwall 3 Prices vs Leading Battery Brands

The big question here is, does the 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 price really offer good value for money for those looking to install a solar panel system.

The short answer? No.

Better value comes by purchasing a unit from our list of the best solar battery brands in the UK.

We fit a range of solar storage batteries. Typically, you’d expect these batteries to add to the price of your solar panel system by the following amounts:

  • Small solar storage battery (5.3kW): £2,495
  • Medium solar storage battery (10.6kW): £3,745
  • Large solar storage battery (15.9kW): £4,995

With prices in the UK Tesla Powerwall 3 being £8,500+ for a complete setup, there’s much better value on offer from alternative brands and batteries.

The prices we mention above, include installation and necessary hardware.

Taking the large 15.9kW Sunsynk battery as an example, you’d be paying £4,995 including VAT; a saving of £3,000 in comparison to typical Tesla Powerwall 3 battery prices, including installation.

And alongside this cash saving, you’ll actually have over 2kW of extra battery storage to hand.

Sunsynk is one of the leading solar battery brands in the UK, as is evident from their Trustpilot reviews. Customers rate Sunsynk 4.6 stars, with 83% rating them as 5 star, as you can see in our Sunsynk battery review

Tesla Powerwall 2 vs Powerwall 3

When comparing Tesla's home energy storage solutions, it's essential to understand the distinctions between the Powerwall 2 and the newer Powerwall 3 to determine which best aligns with your energy needs.

Both models offer a storage capacity of 13.5 kWh. However, they differ in several key aspects:

  • Scalability: The Powerwall 2 allows for the combination of up to 10 units, providing a total storage capacity of 135 kWh. In contrast, the Powerwall 3 supports up to 4 units, totaling 54 kWh of storage. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
  • Power Output: The Powerwall 3 delivers a continuous power output of 11.5 kW, more than double that of the Powerwall 2's 5 kW. This increased output enables the Powerwall 3 to support more power-intensive appliances and larger energy demands. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
  • Integrated Inverter: The Powerwall 3 features an integrated solar inverter, allowing for direct connection to solar panels and potentially reducing installation complexity and cost. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

While the Powerwall 2 offers greater scalability in terms of total storage capacity, the Powerwall 3 provides enhanced power output and integration features. It's also important to note that the Powerwall 2 is an older model and may be phased out in the future.

For homeowners primarily interested in solar energy storage without the need for extensive backup power capabilities, exploring solar batteries specifically designed for seamless integration with solar panel systems might be a more cost-effective solution.

To determine the most suitable battery storage option for your home and to receive personalized recommendations, consider consulting with solar energy experts or using specialized solar panel assessment tools.

Warranty vs Price

As with any large purchase, you’ll want to make sure you’re covered when buying a solar storage battery.

Some low-end manufacturers only provide a warranty of 5-years. That’s simply not enough. Even a small solar panel battery is going to cost £2,495+, so you definitely don’t want to be footing the bill for a replacement.

Tesla’s Powerwall 3 comes with a reasonable warranty of 10-years. However, leading solar storage batteries (such as Sunsynk) also offer a 10-year warranty.

And as we’ve already mentioned, whilst you’d be in for approximately £8,500 for a Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kW) you’d only pay £4,995 for a Sunsynk (15.9kW). You’ll get the same warranty, £3000 in savings, and more battery storage.
