Glow-worm Boilers: Reviews, Prices & Specs

Three Glowworm boilers with a red background

With dozens of brands available in the UK, it's confusing picking a new boiler.

In our Glow-worm boiler review, we'll help you understand whether this is the brand for you, and which model you need, by covering:

  • Overall, is Glow-worm a good boiler brand?
  • How Glow-worm boiler prices (with and without installation cost) compare to other manufacturers
  • How people rate Glow-worm by researching online company reviews
  • A look at the Glow-worm combi, system and heat-only boiler range

In Summary: Are Glow-worm Boilers Any Good?

One of the leading manufacturers of boilers in the UK, is Vaillant. Back in 2001, they acquired Glow-worm and since then, the brand has been known for offering high-end boilers, yet they're priced in the mid-range.

Glow-worm offer a range of combi, system and heat only boilers, with warranty offerings from 5-10 years (when using a Club Energy installer and Power Filter); which is more than adequate.

In terms of pricing, expect them to be around £100 less than other leading brands (such as Worcester Bosch), with installation costs starting at around £2,300. However, bear in mind many variables affect the overall price, with the average installation sitting in the £2,300-£2,800 range.

Glow-worm reviews online are up there with the best in the industry. Of 7,000+ reviews on Trustpilot, 80% rate the brand as 5 star.

Glow-worm Boiler Prices & Installation Costs

Alongside the likes of warranty, company reputation and after-sales care, you’ll want to compare Glow-worm boiler prices against like-for-like units from other brands.

Glow-worm is classed as one of the most reliable boiler brands in the UK, alongside the likes of:

  • Alpha
  • Ideal
  • Vaillant
  • Viessmann
  • Worcester Bosch

In fact, Vaillant Group acquired Glow-worm in 2001. So, whilst their boilers aren’t exactly the same, they’re similar, sometimes using the same components. And since Vaillant acquired them, Glow-worm’s reputation has improved dramatically.

Below we’ll compare Glow-worm boiler prices, with and without installation.

Glow-worm Boiler Prices

An image of a Glowworm boiler

Taking a quick look around online plumbing merchants, you'll see the Glow-worm Easicom₃ 25kW combi boiler priced at around £800-£900. This is Glow-worm's mid-range offering, coming with a solid warranty of 5-years.

Looking at prices from other brands, the Ideal Logic Plus 24kW is priced at around £850-£950 from the same merchants.

So, the Glow-worm would be the cheaper option by £50-£100. However, it is worth noting that the Ideal Logic Plus comes with a 7-year warranty as standard.

Installation Costs

Installation costs for Glow-worm boilers are a little below average when compared to other leading boiler brands such as Vaillant, Ideal Heating and Worcester Bosch.

Typical installations for a high quality boiler sit in the region of £2,300-£2,800 on average.

This is going to vary depending on the complexity of the installation, as well as any additional extras you might want (smart heating controls, thermostatic radiator valves etc).

A snippet from the dwellow website showing a boiler quote

The Ideal Logic Plus we mentioned above starts at £2,400 including installation. With Glow-worm being £50-£100 cheaper, you’d expect an installation cost for the Glow-worm Easicom₃ 25kW combi boiler to be £2,300-£2,350.

Prices for boiler installations vary from property to property. And that’s because no installation is the same.

A few variables that affect the cost of installing your Glow-worm boiler include:

  • Upgrading old pipework to comply with current Gas Safe standards
  • Installing thermostatic radiator valves
  • A system upgrade (for instance, converting a setup using a heat-only boiler, to a combi)
  • Adding smart heating controls
  • Moving the boiler and / or flue

Glow-worm Company Reviews

Glow-worm is a huge player in the UK heating market. However, if you’re not in the industry, it’s likely the only brand you know is Worcester Bosch.

So, how do you determine if Glow-worm is a good boiler brand?

Like with any large purchase, it’s worth spending some time checking online reviews. And naturally, the best place to check for Glow-worm boiler reviews is over on Trustpilot

Glow-worm TrustPlot review, a snippet from the Trust pilot page with score of 4.3

As you can see, Glow-worm has over 7,000 reviews, averaging 4.3 stars. And better still, over 80% of buyers rate Glow-worm 5 star!

Another way you can check if a boiler brand is reliable, is to browse their product range and see the warranty they offer. Typically, a low warranty offering is a sign of a low quality boiler.

When under warranty, the boiler manufacturer will need to foot the bill for any repairs. And boiler repairs aren't cheap.

Here are some examples of what you should expect to pay if your boiler breaks down:

  • Gas valve replacement: £300
  • New automatic air vent: £150
  • Pressure release valve repair: £150
  • New heat exchanger: £400
  • Replacement printed circuit board (PCB): £400-£500

Put simply, you don’t want to be forking out for these repairs!

Some lower quality boiler manufacturers will offer a warranty on some models as low as 1-year; that’s simply not enough.

A quick scan of the Glow-worm combi boiler range shows you can get the Energy Combi with a warranty of up to 10-years! Or, you could go with the cheaper option, the Easicom₃, which still comes with a solid 5-year warranty from Glow-worm.

If you're looking at units from other brands, we'd suggest buying a boiler that comes with a manufacturer's warranty of 5-years as a minimum.

Glow-worm Boiler Reviews

Below, we’ll give an overview of the Glow-worm boiler range, including what they offer in terms of combi, system and heat-only units.

Glow-worm Combi Boiler Reviews

Compact Combi

Available in a 24kW or 28kW unit, the Glow-worm Compact is the perfect combi boiler for small spaces. It will easily fit in the likes of a kitchen cupboard, saving you space elsewhere (airing cupboards etc).

It comes with an easy to use display and being A-rated, it's extremely efficient. The 24kW unit works at 92% ErP efficiency and the 28kW unit operates at 93%.

Every purchase of the Glow-worm Compact combi boiler comes complete with a 5-year warranty.

And for those that need it, there’s also a Glow-worm Compact LPG model.

Our boiler tool here offers fixed prices on-screen in a matter of minutes. You can then compare those prices to other leading brands in the heating space.

Energy Combi

The Glow-worm Energy combi boiler is one of our favourites in the range.

It's small enough to fit in the likes of a kitchen cupboard and is available as a 25kW, 30kW or 35kW unit. That means there's a unit to suit most 1-4 bedroom properties.

Better still, it comes with a longer warranty than the Compact we mentioned above. As standard you'll get 7-years from Glow-worm. However, if you use a Club Energy Installer and a Glow-worm Power Filter, this warranty can be extended to a massive 10-years.

Whilst you'll pay £100-£200 more than you would for the Compact, we feel it's worth the extra cost, given the 5-years of extra warranty.

You can get prices on the Glow-worm Energy combi here, and directly compare prices to the likes of Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal Heating.

Or, read more about the Glow-worm Energy here.

Ultimate₃ Combi

Next we have the Glow-worm Ultimate₃ combi. This unit is focused on medium-large properties, with only 30kW and 35kW outputs available.

With the 30kW you'll get a 12.4L per minute DHW (domestic hot water). For those that have a little more hot water demand from taps and showers, the 35kW provides 14.4L per minute.

Like all Glow-worm boilers, it's A-rated, with an 89.6% (30kW) and 89.7% (35kW) seasonal efficiency rating.

Warranty wise, it comes with 5-years as standard. You'll want to make sure you use a Club Energy Installer (Dwellow's installer are registered with Club Energy), as they'll be able to offer a massive 10-year warranty when the Ultimate₃ is fitted with a Power Filter.

Read more in our Glow-worm Ultimate boiler review here.

Easicom₃ Combi

The Easicom₃ comes with a free 5-year warranty and is suited to smaller properties; 1-3 bedrooms given it's only available as a 24kW and 28kW unit.

Like many of the Glow-worm boilers in this review, it's compatible with MiGo, a smart way to control your heating, improving efficiency.

With the Easicom₃ combi, you'll get instant hot water, a free boiler clock and a robust aluminium heat exchanger, helping to cement this as one of the most reliable boilers in the UK.

Read more in our Glow-worm Easicom boiler review here.

MicraCom

The Miracom is known for being one of the smallest boilers on the market, being just 626 x 400 x 270. A great option for those looking to fit a combi boiler in a small kitchen cupboard.

Efficiency ratings are also up there with the best, with 92% (24kW) and 93% (28kW) ErP ratings. If you have an old boiler of any kind, the increase in efficiency is going to drop your energy bills dramatically.

The stainless steel heat exchanger helps to prolong the boiler's life and of course, means repair bills are minimised.

You'll be able to use the Miracom combi with the likes of:

  • MiGo Link Internet Gateway
  • MiSet
  • MiGo Select Smart Control
  • Climastat Select

So, you'll have plenty of options when it comes to integrating your boiler into your smart home!

Glow-worm System & Heat-only Boiler Review

An image of a Glowworm boiler

We won't write up boiler reviews for each system and heat-only boiler, simply as they cross-over with the Glow-worm combi boiler reviews above.

The range of system and heat-only boilers is a lot simpler (all covered above), and includes:

  • Glow-worm Energy
  • Glow-worm Ultimate₃
  • Easicom₃

The range doesn’t include the additional options of the: Compact, Compact LPG and Miracom.
