Getting Solar Panel Quotes Online

Overview: Getting Online Solar Panel Quotes

Solar panels are expensive, so it makes sense to get multiple quotes. And that’s not just to get the “best price”, it’s to ensure the system that’s installed is 100% suitable for your property.

Only MCS registered installers will enable your system to qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee. By doing so, you’ll be able to sell excess electricity back to the grid and earn an income in the process.

Our easy to use solar panel quotation tool will:

  • Ask you a few details about your property which gives us a baseline on which setup is likely suitable
  • Scan your roof to determine the exact system that suits your property

Typical quotes for an average 3-bedroom semi-detached property are likely to be:

  • £6,000 (solar panels only)
  • £10,000 (panels and a suitable storage battery)

With this system, you can expect to save around £711 per year on your energy bills (partly made up of a £228 per year payment via the Smart Export Guarantee).

Use our clickable quotation tool, scan your roof, and get your fixed price quotation on-screen within 2-minutes.

Solar Panel Quotation Process

The process for getting solar panel quotes is fairly straightforward on Dwellow’s website.

Use our clickable solar panel quote tool here. It’s easy to use on your phone, tablet or PC and will only take a couple of minutes to complete.

You’ll need to first give us an estimation of how much electricity you use, or, tell us a few details about your property so we can estimate usage on your behalf.

Once we’ve gathered all relevant details about your property, all we’ll need to do then is scan your roof

This allows us to determine the roof pitch, direction and size.

Different roofs (even of the same size) will be able to generate more electricity via solar panels than another. So, a roof scan is an important part of determining the exact type of solar panel system that’s most suited to your property.

Once we’ve got all these details we’ll be able to suggest a system, suitable battery and move onto the next stage that includes:

  • A free home assessment to confirm all details are correct and cover any questions you might have
  • Lock in your solar panel quote after completing a technical survey
  • Book an installation date that suits you!

How Much Will Your Solar Panel Installation Cost?

From one installer to another, you could see a £2,500+ price differential for what seems like the same package.

Generally, the 3 biggest factors that affect how much your solar panel quote is, are:

  • Complexity of your installation (roof access etc)
  • The size of your installation (more panels and inverters as well as a larger storage battery means more money)
  • The quality of the components used (low quality products with a short warranty are naturally going to be cheaper than high quality products with a long warranty)

Solar Panel Installation Prices

If we look at a typical 3-bedroom semi-detached house with average exposure to sunlight, you should expect your solar panel quote to be in the region of £6,000.

This gets you a 5.16kW system using high quality solar panels that come with a huge 25-year warranty.

In this case, the system uses LONGi panels. And as you can see in our review here, they’re up there with the best solar panel brands in the business!

It’s worth noting that the property used in the example above is sub-optimal in terms of roof direction and orientation. To be able to produce sufficient electricity for this property, a 5.16kW setup needs to be installed.

For those with a roof facing due south and with a pitch of 30°, potential electricity production would be much higher. Put simply, a smaller system (such as a 4kW) is going to suffice, saving cash in the process.

Solar Battery Storage Prices

Now you know the rough price you can expect for your solar panel quote, it’s time to decide if you want a solar storage battery. Batteries aren’t cheap so it’s worth taking the time to decide if you want one and what size.

Solar panels produce the majority of their electricity during the daytime (when most people are at work). If you’re not consuming the electricity your system is producing you have 3 options:

  • Sell it back to the grid (we can handle the application so you can link up to the grid and earn via the Smart Export Guarantee)
  • Stash it in a solar storage battery to be used later
  • Let it go to waste!

Put simply, letting it go to waste isn’t a “real” option. And whilst selling back to the grid is, if you need to buy back electricity, you’ll pay more per kWh than they paid you on export; you’re losing out on cash.

The best option is to store excess electricity via a solar battery. And for the 5.16kWh system we mentioned above, we have options from £2,495-£4,995 depending on how much extra electricity your solar panels are producing.

As you can see our initial solar panel quote of under £6,000, rises to around £9,000 when we fit a suitable solar storage battery.

This is a 10.6kW battery that will hold enough electricity to power most household appliances, even when your solar panels aren’t generating electricity. And, it’s manufactured by one of the best brands in the industry; Sunsynk.

Expected Payback Period For Solar Panels

Based on the quote of just under £10,000 for a 5.16kW system and utilising a medium solar storage battery, you can expect your payback period for your solar panel system to be in the region of 14 years.

However, this assumes a fixed electricity cost per kWh during this period. Energy prices are consistently increasing…

By investing in solar panels you protect yourself from rising costs. And, if costs do rise? Your payback period is going to reduce dramatically.

Using the 5.16kW system above, you’d expect to save somewhere in the region of £711 per year.

£228 of this saving comes in the form of a payment from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), thanks to your excess electricity production. Of course, you could purchase a larger battery, sell less back to the grid, and keep it as usable electricity instead.

On top of this, you’ll have a setup that works at 86% self-efficiency; you have very little reliance on the grid, and are nearly completely protected from rising energy costs.

Our clickable solar panel quote tool generates all of the following for any property once you input a couple of details:

  • Quote for solar panel installation (panels only)
  • Quote for solar panel installation (including a storage battery)
  • Expected payback period
  • Estimated monthly and annual savings
  • Self sufficiency percentage (therefore, how much you rely on the grid for additional electricity)

Getting Solar Panel Quotes From MCS Installers

The MCS logo
(Source: MCS)

Any solar panel quote provided by Dwellow includes installation by a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited installer.

MCS is recognised by the UK government as a scheme that monitors and sets out guidelines for low carbon installations. These installations include the likes of: air source heat pumps, biomass boilers and of course, solar panels.

Not only does MCS ensure installers are safe and competent, they also ensure that installations are completed to a set of minimum standards.

In the case of solar panel installations, MCS certification becomes even more important. If your solar panel installation isn't completed by a MCS professional, it won't be eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

The SEG allows consumers to sell excess electricity back to the grid. In our example above (payback period), you’ll see that £228 of the estimated £711 per year in savings comes from selling energy back to the grid.

Remember, this also applies to DIY solar panel installations; you’ll lose out on big savings via the SEG scheme by completing a solar panel installation yourself.
